Tom meets the woman he is expected to marry.
Tom stood with his family on one side of the grand ballroom, the Californica Papavers on the other, both bloodlines busying their mouths and hands with the deft embroidery of small talk. No-one had dared cross the no-man’s land in between, fearing the social Gatling guns of the opposing force.
Once the music started, the division faded as couples arranged themselves in the formal dances, ones that he’d been practising for weeks before he had bolted.
“Do me a favour Kat,” he whispered as she took refuge behind him from hopeful male dance partners. “Find out what Lucy’s like.”
“Please, before Elizabeth gets hold of her.”
His youngest sister looked like a perfect porcelain doll with an advanced animation spell cast upon it; large hazel-green eyes and delicate curls of chestnut brown hair. He recalled Katarina cursing her once as a child when she’d ripped up her favourite book. It had made her sick for days to do it, but she felt that hearing Elizabeth only being able to say “mama” like an old-fashioned doll for twenty-four hours had been worth it. Katarina had grown out of that behaviour. Elizabeth had not.
