“You can’t have run away,” Cathy replied. “You moved out years ago.”
“Don’t be pedantic.”
She made the tea – if there was ever time it was needed it was now – and set the mugs down on the table. She slipped into the chair opposite him and opened the HobNobs. Damn the crumbs, this was an emergency.
“You know what I meant,” he said, plucking out a biscuit and dunking it. “I’ve run away from them, the… family.”
She nodded, she knew all right. She tried to ignore his breech of biscuit etiquette. So what if he was dunking a HobNob and not a Rich Tea? That wasn’t a crime, just unwise. Euw, but what about the crumby sludge at the bottom?
“Nothing to say?” he sighed.
“Just taking it all in,” she lied as she took a biscuit. He wouldn’t understand about the sludge. “This hasn’t got anything to do with this thing in Bath has it?”
