Suspicion
Anna knew something was wrong as soon as he opened the door. “Hi,” she said brightly, but he only smiled and stepped aside, distracted. “You didn’t forget I was coming over did you?”
He shook his head and closed the door. “Of course not. Tea?”
“Please.” She trailed after him to the tiny kitchen, watching him put the kettle on. “You look tired.”
“I didn’t sleep well,” he replied.
“I tried calling last night, to remind you, but you weren’t in.”
“No.”
She waited for more as the steaming water was poured, noting that he’d made her tea in the only mug without a chip. “Was it something nice?”
“What?” he asked, handing her the tea.
“The thing you were doing last night.”
He ran a hand through his hair, frowning. “Just an audition.”
“What for?”
